Wearing eyes and ears is a must when you shoot guns. I very much value my eyesight and hearing, so I will try my hardest to protect both. At the same time, I get annoyed by PPE, and I am constantly seeking the most comfortable, most usable PPE out there. I think I might have figured out the best ears on the market, and that’s the Axil Trackr Blu headphones. I use both headphones and earplugs, and the Ghost Strike 2 were great earplugs, so why not give the Trackr Blu a try to cover my earmuff needs?
Let’s dive into the Trackr Blu and why I think Axil has cracked the code on headphones.
Inside The Axil Trackr Blu
These are earmuffs, which means they completely cover your ears. This provides the highest level of protection possible from your ear protection. The Trackr Blu headphones are a very modern design that utilizes a low profile, easy folding design for easy storage and transport in your range bag. It’s quite nice and very convenient when traveling to the range.
When I say modern, I might as well say futuristic. These headphones incorporate some awesome electronics and mics to make it possible to hear the world around you. In fact, you can even amplify noises around you, yet they effectively mute loud noises and protect your ears. Specifically, anything over 82 DBS will be instantly blocked.
As the title Blu infers, you get Bluetooth technology that makes it possible to link your headset to your phone or other devices. You can listen to music and podcasts or make phone calls while you shoot or wait your turn. As I wait for my turn at the Steel Challenge match, I try to sneak in a little pump-up music to get me ready to shoot.
Protection and Sound Quality
There are two things that are critical to me with these types of headphones. What kind of protection do they offer, and what is the sound quality of the mics? Protection is the most important factor, and the Axil Trackr Blu cuts off 27 dB of noise, effectively bringing the sound of a gunshot to safe levels.
These are my favorite headphones for shooting at the rifle range indoors. They take what can be a superbly loud and crazy environment and minimize it. Shooting rifles indoors, especially SBRs, can be quite the experience, and I don’t recommend plugs for that task. Stick with muffs. Plugs are great, but muffs offer the most protection possible, plus they stay in place without any difficulty.
They offer protection, but what’s the sound quality like? Well, in terms of ambient noise that’s amplified, it’s very clear and easy to hear. You can have full-on conversations, listen to range commands, and more without issues.
The Bluetooth is dang near recreational headphones good. I love to listen to podcasts, and these are perfect for that. They allow me to catch up on my Forgotten Weapons videos as I move and grove at the range.
Comfort Factor
Good ear protection needs to be comfy, especially on a long day full of training. The Axil Trackr Blu headset is super comfortable. These are heavily padded ear muffs that grip you just right around the ears. They are one size fits all, and even on my big head, they don’t squeeze and pinch.
I’ve worn the Axil Trackr Blu headphones for three to four hours at a time during classes, and they never felt uncomfortable. Even with the noise cranked up, they never hurt my ears or felt uncomfortable. Speaking of noise, they do feature independent controls for the Bluetooth controls and external mics.
I think these headphones are so comfortable that I use them for non-shooting events. I toss them on when I mow, weed eat, use a chainsaw, and do anything else that needs me to drown out the noise.
Why You Should Go Electonic
To me, electronic hearing protection is a must if you are a serious shooter. Having good situational awareness is nice, especially at public ranges where some people act a fool. Additionally, if you take classes and continue your firearm education, then you gotta have electronic headphones. This way, you can hear instructions and actually get what you pay for.
The Axil Trackr Blu offers the highest quality electronic earmuffs I’ve used to date. They are exceptionally clear and comfy and provide me with Bluetooth compatibility, which I love quite a bit. I’ve been using them for over a year now, and they keep on turning on.
